Bagelicious

Only a couple of months old, the latest addition to the Bagelicious’ family already has regular customers keen to get their hands on some crispy, chewy Bagelicious creations.

Large baskets of different flavours await the fans at this Glenferrie Road eatery. We loved that each bagel we tried was well-made. Each boasting a wonderful rich glowing crust that was firm and crunchy, protecting its chewy, dense crumb inside.

An array of healthy fillings make Bagelicious a fantastic lunch option. And there are even great non-bagel options such as their healthy and flavoursome soups.

The drinks menu is not to be outshone, with a variety of cold drinks including smoothies and freshly squeezed juices. Their iced coffee is a stand-out. Made from skim milk and real coffee, it is  delicious way to get your caffeine hit for the day.

Haloumi cheese bagel served with pesto, beetroot dip, lettuce & onion (Add On: chicken)

The haloumi bagel was a delicious option. Served with charred haloumi, fresh pesto, slightly tart beetroot dip and our requested add on of chicken breast, the bagel tasted wholesome.

Chicken breast bagel served with avocado dip, lettuce, roasted capsicum, and alfalfa sprout

The breast bagel was just as good. The chicken was tender and went well with the well-roasted capsicum, luxurious avocado dip and crisp lettuce. It was a healthy bagel option which ticked all the boxes.

Blueberry bagel served with peanut butter, m&ms and twirls

We ended our visit on a decadent note with a dessert bagel which was made of… well, the stuff of dreams. An aromatic toasted blueberry bagel arrived filled with melting peanut butter, m&ms and chocolate twirls. It was very naughty but equally delicious.

Bagelicious offers bagels with just the right combination of crispy crust and chewy inside, and a brilliant selection of fillings to please just about anyone.

#GastrologyInGranada - Daring and innovative cuisine @ Los Patos

Regularly described as one of Granada's “destination” restaurants, Los Patos allows diners to embark on a culinary journey through the local flavours of Granada.

Housed within the classical Hospes Palacio de los Patos, the restaurant benefits from its inspired surrounds. The mixture of colours, textures, light and prominent water feature creates a calm, relaxing environment. The menu by Head Chef Blas Hidalgo features fresh local produce, modern culinary techniques and authentic flavour combinations.

The dining room boasts floor to ceiling windows which partition the large, airy space and provide a view out to the gardens.

The dining service runs seamlessly, led by friendly and knowledgeable sommelier and restaurant manager, Carlos Alvarez.

From left: “Salmorejo cordobés” Cold tomato soup with Iberian ham and egg; “Remojon granaino” Tipical salad with potatoes, codfish, orange, black olives and olive oil.

We started with several traditional entrees as well as more modern dishes. The Salmorejo cordobés was luxurious while the Remojon granaino was refreshing. The hot entrees also impressed with flavour. The Iberian cheek croquettes in particular were expertly made. The croquette had a wonderfully crisp exterior which combined beautifully with the tender cheek and Iberian ham which provided salinity to the dish.

From left: Black budding candies, Moorish lamb pastela, puff pastry pieces with lamb and vegetables, Iberian cheek croquettes; Skewer crumb with sausages, Prawn skewer, Californian roll

Potato and truffle foam

The potato and truffle foam was absolutely outstanding. The creamy and light whipped potato was combined with generous shavings of black truffle. The potato foam was texturally perfect and provided a magnificent canvas for the pungent truffle. A simply mesmerising dish.

From left: Cod tripe and chickpeas; Scrambled eggs with morels and Iberian ham

Calamari and artichokes with squid ink vinaigrette

Another highlight of our amazing degustation was the dish of calamari and artichokes with squid ink vinaigrette. The dish boasted tremendous balanced - with the richness of the squid ink vinaigrette combining well with the perfectly cooked, tender calamari.

We were pleased to leave wine matching in the expert hands of Carlos. Each course matched each wine perfectly and gave a tremendous insight into Spanish varietals.

Baby octopus with “concasse”tomato and smoke oil

A vibrant dish of baby octopus with tomato and smoked oil graced our presence next. Flavoursome and aromatic, the subtle sweetness of the baby octopus was allowed to shine through.

Lobster stew

The lobster stew was tremendous. Sweet, luscious, perfectly cooked morsels of lobster were bathed in a rich, aromatic broth of impressive depth and complexity.

Red mullets with asparagus, mushrooms and “noisset”butter

A complex but well balanced dish, the red mullet was perfectly seared and its natural flavour was further enhanced by the subtle sweetness of noisiest butter sauce. It was a magnificent dish.

Oxtail with “parmentier cream” beet pure and demiglace

The oxtail was tender and delicious, with caramel undertones courtesy of being slow-braised. Paired with an earthy braising sauce, the oxtail fell away at the weight of our spoons.

Our favourite wine from the evening was the 1368 Cerro Las Monjas. The wine was a wonderful blend grown in high altitude, and boasted black fruits, aromatic complexity, vibrant acid and well structured tannins.

Crisp pig, comfit potato and “padron” green peppers

Los Patos has truly mastered the art of pork roasting. The pork was succulently roasted to retain its juiciness, achieving a healthy layer of melt-in-the-mouth fat in the process. The crackling possessed an ideal crunch, elevating the tender pork meat.

From left: Spice orange with tangerine ice cream; Coconut soup, berries, orange zest and pistachio ice cream

Our dinner concluded on a sweet note with a duo of desserts. Each dessert was beautifully prepared. The spice orange with tangerine ice cream was refreshing with its citrus acidity while the coconut soup with berries, orange zest and pistachio ice cream was decadent and well-conceived. In keeping with the incredibly high standard for the evening, these desserts were a thoroughly enjoyable end to an amazing meal.

Petit fours: Almonds “macaron”, Spice orange, “Pionono” typical dessert

In the safe hands of Head Chef Blas Hidalgo, Los Patos impresses with daring and innovative culinary techniques combined seamlessly with tradition. A decadent and memorable dining experience, Los Patos is a restaurant that truly lives up to its outstanding reputation.

Collins Quarter

Collins Quarter is a sleek restaurant that occupies a Victorian terrace which boasts an inspired blend of 19th and 21st century design.

The dining room is at once traditional and relaxed, shunning the grungy look that is today’s Melbourne norm in favour of a more conventional bistro atmosphere. Dimly lit with scattered pockets of luminescence emitting from tabletop candles, it is a comfortable setting.

The menu has distinct European influences and focuses on fresh, local produce.

Seared scallops, Soused Mushrooms, Black Garlic & Kalamata Olive Tapenade

The scallops were beautifully seared and boasted natural sweetness while the mixture of mushrooms, garlic and olive tapenade added a lovely salinity to the dish.

Hot smoked ocean trout

The salty smokiness of the trout was complemented by the fresh salad of quinoa, fennel, baby beetroot and orange which provided a medley of exciting flavours and textures while the crème fraiche and horseradish brought all the elements together.

Roast corn-fed Macedon duck breast

The slices of duck breast were cooked to perfection with the mellow white bean and kale cassoulet allowing the rich flavour of the duck to transpire.  The accompanying cigar was filled with tender shreds of confit duck leg encased in a crisp pastry skin and provided a delicious flavour which was punctuated with subtle aniseed notes. The sweet and sticky pickled rhubarb chutney provided the crowning element to a wonderful dish.

Cape grim beef cheek bourguignon, Paris mash

The slow braised beef cheek was excellent - Simple, delicious and very well executed. The beef was exceedingly flavoursome and "melt in the mouth" while the accompanying mash was luxurious.

Selection of house made ice creams

Hot chocolate fondant

The chocolate fondant would have pleased any chocolate love with its rich billowing chocolate centre and slightly crisp cake exterior. The vanilla bean ice cream which accompanied the fondant matched it well and was refreshingly light and fragrant while the poached spiced pear and salted honeycomb added interest.

Collins Quarter impresses with well executed dishes which highlight innovative, yet familiar, flavour combinations. A truly compelling dining option.

#GastrologyInGranada - Flamenco show + dinner @ Jardines de Zoraya

Gastrology recently enjoyed an authentic Flamenco Night at Jardines de Zoraya which is located at the heart of the Albayzin in Granada.

We commenced with a lovely dinner in the surrounds of their stunning garden.

We enjoyed their delicious menu which showcased traditional Spanish cuisine.

We then enjoyed a whole hour Flamenco show which was both intense and magical.

The show celebrates the wonderful tradition of flamenco with talented singers and guitarists.

Featuring a stunning line up of dancers, it was a compelling, passionate, and vibrant show that captures all of the excitement and drama of Flamenco in Spain.

Each moment in this performance was fantastic, each song was full of emotion and electrifying.

Be amazed at Jardines de Zoraya with artistic excellence and rustic Spanish cuisine for an evening which will delight all the senses. Ole!
